Current burden of covid infections by canton

Admission to hospital during the covid pandemic?

The number of people testing positive for Corona is decreasing significantly in Switzerland. The special situation has been lifted. In many cantons, wearing a mask in health care facilities remains compulsory for the time being - for example in Zurich, Lucerne, Bern and Basel. The burden of Corona in hospitals is low. There are presently 526 patients in hospital treatment for (or with - see explanations below) covid infection, and nationwide, 2.5% of the available hospital beds are occupied by patients with COVID-19. 30 covid patients are in intensive care units throughout Switzerland, which means that 3.8% of the available intensive care beds are currently occupied by patients with COVID. Although new infections continue to occur, Swiss hospitals are at the moment not much burdened by Corona patients. Elective procedures are currently possible in all cantons. Our tables show you the situation in realtime.

Differences in COVID-19 load as a criterion for hospital selection?

The number of hospital admissions due to / with COVID is decreasing in Switzerland.

However, hospitals are currently only lightly burdened with the treatment of corona patients.

A useful measure of the corona burden on hospitals in a canton is the proportion of beds occupied by corona patients (measured against the total number of hospital beds available in the canton) or, alternatively, the occupancy rate of intensive care beds by COVID cases.

Please note that the statistics published by the Federal Office of Public Health count all hospital patients who are corona test positive. About half of these people have been admitted for another condition and have mild or no corona symptoms (according to estimates by NZZ / HUG and Blick / USZ). Therefore, please interpret the figures presented - which overestimate the actual burden - with caution.

Unfortunately there are at present no "hospital-specific" numbers of covid cases available. However, it can be assumed that covid cases are more frequently treated in larger general hospitals, central hospitals and university hospitals - especially in facilities with intensive care units. Specialist hospitals are probably less affected.

Relevant quality indicators with regard to covid

With regard to covid disease, the mortality data for artificial respiration and pneumonia per hospital may be of interest.

Further specific comparative data for covid are not available. However, more general key indicators such as patient satisfaction or bedsore rates can also be helpful when choosing a hospital for covid infection.
