Parents' satisfaction with child and adolescent psychiatry

All parents of children and adolescents (aged 11 - 18 years) who left a Swiss psychiatric clinic in 2023 were asked to rate ‘their clinic’. We use the most general question block ‘Review of treatment’, which contains 7 questions on the success of treatment. The parents' satisfaction is high with a mean score of 3.98 (out of a maximum of 5).

The paediatric and adolescent psychiatry department at Winterthur Cantonal Hospital received the best marks from parents, although the result is not significant due to the small number of cases. Two clinics show significantly above-average parent satisfaction. These are the Sonnenhof Clinic in Ganterschwil and the adolescent psychiatric ward, Fürstenwald Therapy Centre of the Grisons Psychiatric Services in Chur. The latter also received very good ratings from the patients themselves, whereas Klinik Sonnenhof did not.

Two clinics received significantly below-average ratings. These are the Réseau fribourgeois de santé mentale, Marsens and the adolescent psychiatry department of the Psychiatric University Clinic Zurich PUK.

When choosing a clinic, you should also consider other key figures such as the satisfaction of the patients themselves (children and adolescents).

The response rate for the 2023 parent survey was 45%. A total of 28 clinics took part. 1,279 questionnaires were included in the analyses. The average age of the children and adolescents was 15.2 years.

Profile of the key figure parents' satisfaction with child and adolescent psychiatry

About the indicator «Patient satisfaction»

Patient satisfaction is an important measure of hospital quality. It primarily reflects the patients' perception of the quality of treatment, the medical result and the competence and friendliness of the staff. In addition, when comfort elements such as good food and beautiful spaces surpass patients' expectations, excellent ratings are achieved. However, good comfort factors alone (without good medical quality) do not lead to high ratings.

Patient satisfaction is measured by ANQ (National group for quality development in Swiss hospitals and clinics) via a standardized questionnaire. These measurements may be considered the most reliable and comprehensive in Switzerland. The patients are each asked six questions after hospital discharge (multiple choice). We use the answers to the most general question about the quality of hospital treatment. In paediatrics, similar questions are used to query the satisfaction of the parents. The ANQ evaluations include a risk adjustment to make the hospitals comparable.

Strengths:

Patient satisfaction shows the view of the customer. It is therefore the most direct, honest and only holistic measurement. Patient satisfaction increases with good medical and nursing care and also reflects the quality of communication and the "atmosphere".

Limits:

Not all patients fill in the questionnaires; a low response rate results in uncertainty whether the non-responders would probably think differently.
