The staffing of Swiss hospitals is very good in international comparison (cf. OECD, Health at a Glance, 2021, page 225). At the same time, the density of doctors in Switzerland's acute-somatic hospitals varies considerably - between 0.1 and 2.5 doctors per hospital bed. The average is around one doctor per hospital bed. At university hospitals, the density of doctors is almost twice as high on average, while at specialty clinics it is generally much lower. There are also large differences between the cantons, which are difficult to explain. The canton of Graubünden, with about 1.3 doctors per hospital bed, has a hospital doctor density about three times higher than the canton of Valais.
The data include affiliated doctors.
Measured as the number of employees (doctors incl. affiliated doctors, nurses) per (100% occupied) bed in a hospital.
