Quality-indicators of hospitals and clinics in Switzerland:

Treatment outcomes in musculoskeletal rehabilitation

Outcomes in musculoskeletal, orthopaedic and accident rehabilitation (after bone fractures, joint operations, joint diseases, back problems, etc.)

Swiss rehabilitation clinics regularly record the success of treatment in musculoskeletal rehabilitation on behalf of the federal government. They measure patients' improvement in important skills of daily live (self-care, continence, transfer, locomotion, communication and socio-cognitive functions) between admission to the clinic and discharge.

In the current year, we have meaningful data on 24,910 patients from 59 clinics. Fourteen clinics achieved a significantly above-average treatment outcome, while 16 clinics significantly underperformed. For the remaining clinics, results are in the mid range.

The Wolhusen Hospital (Luzerner Kantonsspital) - same as last year - showed the best treatment success in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, albeit based on a small number of cases. The good results of the larger clinics Zürcher RehaZentrum Wald and ZURZACH Care Rehaklinik Baden in Baden are also impressive. Both also showed very good results in the previous year. The best-rated clinic in French-speaking Switzerland for musculoskeletal rehabilitation is Clinique le Noirmont. Incidentally, the rehabilitation clinics from the French-speaking regions overall performed worse in this measurement (9 of 19 or 47% clinics significantly below average). Also disappointing are the once again below-average values of the relatively large Rehaklinik Bellikon.

It is a question of your personal discretion whether you, as a patient, should choose a clinic further away from home on the basis of excellent result measurements. While choosing a rehab, it can also be advisable to take into account other key figures such as the patient satisfaction, the number of staff (doctors, nurses) or the case numbers (hospital size).

Profile of the key figure treatment outcomes in musculoskeletal rehabilitation

About the indicator «Treatment outcome rehabilitation»

Treatment outcome (outcome quality) in inpatient rehabilitation is measured and evaluated differently depending on the rehabilitation area. The results of the treatment outcome (outcome quality) are risk-adjusted by the ANQ (National Association for Quality Development in Hospitals and Clinics) and thus made comparable. Before publication, they are discussed with the participating clinics.

Strengths:

The measurements by the ANQ have been developed and optimized over several years in cooperation with experts and the involved clinics and are thus well supported. Internationally recognized instruments are used. The evaluation is carried out by recognized research institutes.

Limits:

Rarely, the applied methodology has been criticized, and whether the risk adjustment carried out by the ANQ appropriately reflects the clinic-specific patient mix.
